I GIVE UP!

Okay, I give up. My wife has been after me to update this blog. After all, May 20 is my last entry so i do not see her point! Anyway, she decided to embarrass me on Facebook so I will comply.

This summer we married off one daughter and are getting to marry off the other daughter in march of 2010. We are proud of both of them and approve of their chosen spouses. I finally have the son(s) I never had. Since Sherry refuses to "go for it" one more time in hopes of a male heir, I guess Alex and Ozzie are the next best options.

The house is in a state of flux - at least that is what my fluxometer says. Sherry has been busy tearing out and putting back together. She has become quite a handyman(woman). In fact, she wants tools for Christmas. I am ready to hire her out for home makeovers to make a bit of money.

I know this post has made your day since it is the first in 118 days. Now I am waiting for an apology from my wife on Facebook.

The Saga Continues (Part 2).....

Well, I am legal - finally! It only cost me $131.29 to have the lights fixed on the truck, but it was worth it. The Ford dealership issued my inspection just minutes before closing and then I went to get gas. But, my Shell card would not work! I got it straightened out when I got home.

On Wednesday morning, I was the first one through the doors at the tax office to get the license plates for the truck. It went smooth and the lady was extremely nice. Then on to the DPS office to get my driver's license! I had to dig and to search to find our Social Security cards and birth certificates, but I did locate them. After gathering the rest of the paperwork off we went.

It did not take too long to get the licenses. Once we were finished, the line had grown behind us. We got there at just the right time! Now I am once again a Texan! A shiver went up my spine when I was handed my temporary driver's license! I walked outside the building and took a deep breath of fresh West Texas air. I could hear in the background "The Yellow Rose of Texas". It was an emotional experience!

Now I can truly say........Don't mess with Texas!!

The Saga Continues.......

Okay, so I have not posted in a while. It is hard to be creative when you write two sermons a week along with one Bible Study along with five (5) daily blogs for the church website AND an article for the weekly newsletter. But, I am faithful to you, my wonderful friends who like keeping up with me. So, I will post.

Sherry and I are still in the process of becoming official Texans. I learned as I tried to get license plates for our vehicles that they needed to be inspected first. So, here I go...off to the inspection place. The Camry, no problem. The truck, problem.

"You have a leak in the power steering hose," I am told. Failed inspection. Suzanne, our secretary recommends me to a garage which cannot see me until four days later. "There is no leak in the power steering hose," I am told by the mechanic. "They do not know what they are talking about. Take it to the Ford dealership and the truck will pass inspection."

Moments later I arrive at the Ford dealership. The inspector made it known that he did not like me bringing a Chevrolet to be inspected at the Ford dealership. He was kidding, I think. "Your break lights do not work," I am told. Failed inspection. Back to the mechanic I go. At this moment, the truck is still in repair. Will it pass the third inspection? Stay tuned.

In the meanwhile, I take the Camry to get license plates. After some paperwork, she says, "That will be $187.80." I did not pay a total of $187.80 to license all my vehicles combined in the ten years I lived in Arkansas! But what can I do? Now I have two shiny new plates on the Camry and a bright blue sticker on my windshield.

Next on the agenda is the Texas Department of Public Safety for our driver's licenses. "Could I help you?" the lady asks. "We are here to get a Texas driver's license," I say with trepedation. My fears were realized. "Have you inspected and licensed your vehicles yet? That must come first." AAArgghhhhh!!!!

So it now all hinges on whether the 1994 Chevrolet truck can pass inspection. I am expecting a call shortly from the mechanic. She (yes, she) holds my Texas citizenship in her hands. Pray for us!

Who Rocks My World?

This is a copy of my blog for May 12 on our church website www.fbcbigspring.org

If you want to get in on the ground floor of something exciting, then go to www.whorocksmyworld.com. This is a website designed by my friend Danny Johnson, the Director of Missions of the Pulaski Baptist Association in Little Rock, Arkansas. This web site is an attempt to enable ordinary people like you and me to share the gospel story with people through the internet.

When you go to www.whorocksmyworld.com, type lindseyfamily into the left box. It will take you to my page which gives some information about me and a short testimony. Click on the far right box "seeWhoRocks" and you will see a flash presentation of the gospel message designed to reach people who may never enter a church. At the end of the presentation type in your email address signifying you want to know more and (in future days) you will be sent to our church web page. I will also receive an email showing you want more information. This would give me an opportunity to contact you by email for a follow-up.

You too can register and set up your own page for free by creating an account on the home page. Once you register you can print from your profile page (on the right) business cards to give to people for them to access your page. These cards could be given to friends, classmates, restaurant help, people in the grocery line - you decide how to distribute them!
Remember, this is just the beginning stages of the site. More features will be added in the future.

Once you access the site, then let me know what you think! After all, it could one more tool to use in sharing the gospel message.

"I will become all things to all men so that BY ALL POSSIBLE MEANS I may save some." - 1 Corinthians 9:22

Back and forth...

These last few days behind us and the days before us are tiring. We have been traveling back and forth between Big Spring and Sheridan. We spent a week in Sheridan packing up our belongings and loading them on the moving van and closing on our house. It was good to be with friends, but it was a working week.

Then, six days later we returned to Sheridan for the memorial service of our friend, Carol Balwanz. We arose at 3:00 a.m. on Friday to fly to Little Rock and to arrive just in time for the 4:00 p.m. service. The next morning we arose at 4:00 a.m. to fly back to Midland. It was a quick trip and extremely tiring. I am still trying to catch up on my sleep!

Now, five days later, we drive back to Arkansas for Kimberly's graduation at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. We will help her pack her apartment for the trip to North Carolina where she and Alex will live following their wedding on June 20. The long drive back is concluded on Sunday evening.

Then 40 days later we are back for the wedding!

Hopefully, we will finally get into a "groove" once the traveling is finished. The people here in Big Spring have been wonderful in supporting all of the times we have needed to be absent. The upside to all of this is that we are piling up the mileage on our Rapid Rewards with Southwest Airlines and gaining more points with Hampton Inn. Perhaps one day we will benefit from all of this back and forth with a free trip and a free hotel!

Carol

This past Sunday a good friend, Carol Balwanz, went home to be with the Lord. She fought a good fight through two heart valve replacement surgeries in the span of 10 years. Carol loved her family and was so fond of Caroline, her granddaughter.

My prayers continue for Rick, her husband, and her daughters, Morgan and Jessica. Carol truly touched countless lives through the school, the community, and the church. Many are grieving today because of her death.

Death seems to be the ultimate enemy because it takes away people we love and cherish. But, our Lord, Jesus Christ, conquered death through His death on the cross and His resurrection. Paul so eloquently wote in 1 Corinthians 15, "Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Carol has won the victory! Thanks be to God! She has experienced the healing for which we have all prayed. In our finiteness healing is only physical, but in God's infitness, true healing goes beyond the physical to the giving of a new body. Thanks be unto God!

To Rick, Morgan, Jessica, and Carol's family...So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)

At Home

The long week of packing and moving is over...PTL! I wonder why we have so much stuff. Even after going through boxes and discarding some things, we nearly filled up an 18 wheeler! In reality, the things of this world mean nothing and have no eternal value, but still we want to accumulate.

We were able to connect with some precious friends in Sheridan, if but for a moment or two. But, the time in Sheridan seemed weird. It is no longer home, but there are many memories there. A part of each of us is still in Arkansas. However, the closer I got to Big Spring the more comfortable I felt because it is now home. We love the people here and are learning the value of true friendships developed over the course of time.

The house hunt has been slow, but we are not discouraged. Sherry and I are waiting on the Lord to provide the right property. In the meantime, we are settling into the apartment. Having our own furniture and things are a great comfort. Who knows, we may even want to stay there permanently! Maybe not.

The transition goes on, but at least it is made easier knowing the Lord's hand continues to guide us.

The Blog

In looking back on my previous posts and talking some people here in Big Spring, perhaps I need to clarify the purpose of my blog. I simply want to give insight to our lives as we adjust to a new situation. So, I tend to focus on the struggles and to find the comedy in it. Sherry and I are thankful to be in Big Spring. We love the people and we love the church. The wind, the gnats, the roaches, and all the rest are nothing but silly topics to write about. In fact, there will be more to come!

Today I learned a $64 lesson. Without going into much detail, I secured a storage unit for us to use until we find a house. The apartment cannot hold all our "stuff" so we need some relief. However, after putting down the $64, the church offered to let us use some unused space in the church building for storage. There is a "no refund" policy at the storage place so I lost the bucks. Once again, as I have been known to do, I got ahead of the Lord and paid the price. Will I ever learn?

Roaches

Alright, now I have had it. The gnats were bad enough (thankfully they are gone), now the roaches have moved in. They have been found in the kitchen and in the living area. Hershey spots them and we go into action.

Black Flag is now our best friend. Once the roach is sprayed, it is dead. I mean it turns over on its back and gives up the ghost. I know all of God's creatures have a place in this world, but our apartment is not that place!

Sherry has been dreaming about these roaches and hopefully the roaches will not decide to sleep in the bed with her. I just have to be careful she does not start slapping me in her sleep thinking I am a roach! So I keep my distance.

We have been promised the bug man will be here on Wednesday to exterminate our little guests. So once the roaches are gone, I wonder what plague will be next. Please, no frogs!

The Weather

The weather is certainly interesting in west Texas. One minute the sky is brown with dirt flying around while the wind blows constantly. It can be hot during the day, but at night it is cool. And, thankfully, the humidity is almost nil! Yet, we were not prepared for Saturday night when the hail came.

While dining in Midland, the rain began and soon there was the thud of hail falling on the roof - and our car! As soon as we could finish eating, we drove home only to catch up with the storm and drive through the hail again. It was blinding at times. But, we made it home.

When we arrived home, I decided to put my truck under the covered parking at the bank across the street before the hail arrived. But, the parking lot was filled to overflowing with cars from who knows where! Finally, I found one last spot in the bank drive-thru two blocks away.

Sherry and I are enjoying the changing weather because it is always a challenge to decide what to wear for the day! As I write these words, the weatherman said, "Changes are on the way." Great, now it will probably snow! Whatever happens, though, there is nothing I can do about it.

I am glad God did not give me the authority to control the weather. My only job is to talk about it - and rejoice in the fact that God created the forces of nature. Everything God created is good. In fact, God is good. There is no one like my God!

Settling in...

Well, we are here. Big Spring has officially become our hometown! Apartment living is not so bad. It provides a close environment for Sherry and me to get to know one another again! However, having to get dressed in the middle of the night to walk the dogs to their favorite spots outside to...you know... is getting a bit old. I am thinking about giving them their own key and telling them to lock the door after they are finished.

House hunting is slow. The house for us has yet to surface, but we are in no hurry (unless the dog at night thing gets the best of me). We have a roof over our heads and food in the refrigerator. What else do we need? In God's time He will move us into that dream home. The Lord was faithful to sell our house in Sheridan in three days, so He will be faithful to give us the house reserved just for us.

Our new church has been wonderful. The people here are so loving and kind. I hope this "honeymoon" lasts for a while! On our first Sunday, a water line to the church burst so we cancelled Sunday School and met for worship. It was a great day. The people are starting to realize what they got in me, so I hope they are not disappointed...yet! Sunday night was a church-wide talent fair. I wanted to throw the axe, but decided against it. So, I juggled. it was mediocre at best.

Good days are ahead!

Here I am again...

After hearing from all my "fans" about my absence from the blog world, I have conceded. I have been so busy wrapping up things in Sheridan, selling the house, packing, getting ready for a move, and a shopping trip to Dallas that I simply have not had the time - nor energy - to update the blog. But, I am back!!

God has been so amazing throughout this transition from Arkansas to Texas. After putting the house on the market, it sold within four days. The Lord has provided for our needs every step of the way. We are ready to settle down in Big Spring and to get to work!

In preparing to show the house, Sherry and I cleaned out the refrigerator and freezer. Our ice maker has not worked for 6 months since a repairman worked on the refrigerator last year. So, we have bought ice or "borrowed" ice from the church. However, I discovered a previous unknown feature of our Maytag. On the inside of the freezer door is a switch which says, "Ice Maker On - Ice Maker Off". Yes, you guessed it, the switch was turned to off. We now have ice!

Life is never dull around the Lindsey house!

My posts may be sporadic for the next few days as we make the move west. I am sure there will be much to tell, so stay tuned!

My youngest...

Having mentioned my oldest daughter, I must also give attention to my youngest daughter, Kimberly. She is about to graduate from Ouachita Baptist University in May with her B.A. in Biblical Studies and marry, June 20th, Alex Beasley, a student at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Kim's heart is so tender for the Lord. She, along with Alex, have a love for young people in the church. God is going to use them in a mighty way in serving Him! She has a personality that will not quit - her father's daughter! ;) I am proud of both my daughters.

It is amazing how the Lord can bless Sherry and me with two children who love the Lord. I am not worthy! We have been praying for our daughters' spouses and our grandchildren from the days Kristen and Kimberly were born. Now, some 20+ years later, we are laying eyes on the answers to our prayers. Alex and Ozzie are tremendous young men who have a passion for the Lord and a commitment to serve Him. God is good!

The Bible affirms, Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord... (Psalm 127:3) Kristen and Kim are the Lord's. We have just been the caretakers.

CHECK IT OUT!!

A new blog is up an running! My daughter, Kristen, is now contributing to the world her wisdom and insights into God's Word. I encourage you to stop by her blog and follow it as the Lord teaches us through her words. Her blog is at www.adornthedoctrine.blogspot.com

You go girl!!

My Explanation

Before my wife begins accusing me of any wrongdoing, I must explain myself. Yesterday, I had the privilege of baptizing two sisters. Baptism is always a special time of celebration. However, an incident following the baptism has caused my wife - and others - to question my motives and my actions.

The nature of baptism is immersion. In other words, water is involved. So, naturally, people get wet. Unfortunately, my wife was sitting in the choir loft directly below the baptistery. As I was praying, I "blessed" the congregation with outstretched hands. Coincidentally, some water dripped on to Sherry's head - albeit unintentionally.

For some reason, she feels this was an opportunity for me, her loving husband, to purposefully get her wet. Me? Certainly not! I dispute anything the video may show depicting my alleged offense. You cannot always believe what you see!

I am innocent. And, as Paul Harvey would say, "Now you know the rest of the story!"

The Week Ahead

After a wonderful day in church yesterday, I am gearing up for a busy week. The previous weekend was spent clearing out the garage of all our belongings. Everything went to a storage building where it will be distributed to Alabama, North Carolina, and Texas. It is amazing how much one family can accumulate!

This morning the carpet in the Master Bedroom is being replaced. Once that task is completed, I will move back in - from the newly emptied garage - all the furniture. While the carpet brigade is here, Tony, our handyman, will be power washing the house. The rest of the week, Tony will be painting, fixing, installing, and sprucing up the place.

All of this is fine, but why wait until it is time to sell the house to do what should have been done along the way? My wife asks that question quite regularly. I have no answer. For some reason, my tendency is to put off necessary repairs thinking, "I can do this!" But, I never get around to it. Now, I am paying for it!

Also, this week, I will pack my office; help Sherry pack her classroom, and organize our possessions for the move. There does not seem to be an end to all that needs to be done! Somehow, we will make it.

I hold on to the assurance of God's help - "I can do all things through Christ who is my strength."

Together Again...

These past few days have been enjoyable. Kristen came home from Alabama and Kimberly was here from Arkadelphia. The four of us were able to spend a few precious days together. Only if they had been relaxing......

Friday was consumed with Kimberly's bridal portraits in Little Rock. This was a girls' day so I was not able to enjoy the festivities - shucks! I just wrote the check. Saturday morning saw us meeting with the wedding coordinator, the caterer, and the groom's parents. I had to write another check. That is my job - write checks.

Interspersed throughout the wedding activities was the process of cleaning out the garage. Some of the items will go to Birmingham; some of the items will go to North Carolina; some of the items will go to Big Spring; but, most of the items went to a friend's garage sale. (She wants to remain anonymous!)

Life never slows down. Our children are grown and getting married. They are amazing young women starting lives with a couple of amazing young men. God has blessed us! There is no telling what He is going to accomplish through them!

Me? I just write the checks.

Kristen - where are you?

Now that I have started blogging -whatever that means! - my daughter Kristen is about to jump in and join me. She is a wonderful writer with many important things to say. So, I am looking forward to hearing from her.

All she needs is a title for her blog to get her going. What could it be? I have thought of "Kristen's Krazy Kackles", but that does not seem to sound serious enough. Then I thought of "From My Heart", but that is a bit mushy. What about "Timely Treasures"? Nah! Too generic. "I am Woman!" Too radical. Mmmmm........

"Open for Business" - I like it! Her mind is always churning and grinding as she ponders the relative mysteries of life. Kristen is a thinker. She is wise. Her mind ought to be open for business so all of us can benefit from her wisdom.

Whatever she calls it, I highly recommend you faithfully follow her blog. When she gets on line, blogging will never be the same! So, hurry my daughter! I am waiting! When will you be open for business?

Busy! Busy! Busy!

As I look at the calendar for the remaining of this week, I see many things taking place. Our students will be leaving for their Winter Retreat at Shepherd of the Ozarks - four vans strong! These young people will experience an awesome weekend of worship and fun. Zach Martin is doing a wonderful job of leading our students into a deeper relationship with Christ.

Another van will take our 2009 Guererro Missions advance team to Mexico to prepare for our Mission Trip. Our team, led by Ken Bragg, will meet with Bro. Pedro and Sis. Maria to plan how we can join them in reaching the people of Guerrero, Paras and Agualuegas. This is an exciting time to hear from the Lord how we can obediently serve Him with our amigos y amigas en Mexico!

Also this weekend, our church will host a family reunion in the Student Refuge and a birthday party in the Fellowship Hall. In the midst of all of that Kimberly is gathering her wedding planners to map out the strategy for using the church and the Fellowship Hall for her wedding on June 20.

The calendar is full and our people are busy in one direction or another. Sometimes it is easy to lose focus of what really matters when we get so caught up in all these activities that we forget our Lord desires not our schedules, but our hearts.

I am trying to slow down and seek the Lord first and foremost. The days ahead for Sherry and me will be busy as we pack, plan, and say good-bye to dear friends. There are many demands on our time and for our attention, but nothing matters if Christ is not living through me. I hold on to the promise of Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

A Good Day

Sunday was a good day for Sherry and me. It was difficult emotionally, to say the least, but it has afforded us a transition point to move from where we are to where we will be. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to fully understand the process we have gone through in making the decision to be obedient to God's call on our lives to move to a new ministry.

Some have suggested we just wanted to be closer to Sherry's parents; others believe we want a "bigger and better" place with a higher salary; there are those who wonder what is wrong with our church that would make us want to leave; still others are just angry we are abandoning them at this time. However, many are sensitive to the fact that God is at work. One woman after church came and simply said, "Thank you for being obedient." That is all I needed to hear.

For 10 years God has afforded us the opportunity to experience Him in the midst of a wonderful people. They have always been responsive to the Lord's leading and careful to follow the Lord's leadership of the Pastor. Love has been the hallmark of this congregation and will continue to be in the days ahead. I have all confidence our Lord will raise up a people in this place who will make known the gospel from here to around the world.

There is nothing in me which can take any credit. It is simply amazing to me that God could use someone as unworthy as me in His kingdom's work. All that has been accomplished has been in spite of my shortcomings and failures. Truly the Lord is to be magnified in it all!

As I begin a new work in Texas, I am mindful of the fact that I can do nothing apart from the strength and wisdom of my Lord. I am about to face a task I cannot accomplish on my own. I have never walked this pathway before so all I can do is to trust the Lord to lead the way. At times that overwhelms me, but I am confident that this is not my work - it is His!

God alone deserves the glory. Not me. Not the church. God alone.

"To God be the glory, great things He has done! So loved He the world that He gave us His Son. Who yielded His life an atonement for sin and opened the life gates that all my go in. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear His voice. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice. O come to the Father through Jesus His Son, and give Him the glory great things He has done!"

A Lesson from Hershey

In the middle of the night last night, specifically what time escapes me, my dog, Hershey woke me up to let her outside. Normally, Hershey does not bother us when we are asleep. But last night was different. Hershey, an 86 pound chocolate Lab, has yet to learn to be subtle. She goes full speed in everything she does.

When Lottie comes near her bone, Hershey lets out a loud bark to scare Lottie away. I have never heard her bark softly, until last night. Apparently, she did not want to be rude, so Hershey sat by my side of the bed and let out a muted "Arf!" It was just enough to wake me up, but not to startle me. I appreciated that!

Oftentimes, I am at full-speed in dealing with people. I have high expectations and can be demanding at times. There have even been times when I have "snapped at" people. Unfortunately, not always have I had the sensitivity of Hershey to be more concerned about their needs.

There is a lesson in humility taught by the actions of a chocolate Lab. Humility is essentially thinking of others before you think of yourself. It is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. I need that lesson since the Bible says, "God gives grace to the humble."

I love Hershey. She needs me and I need her!

A Great Day!

In the rain today I had the opportunity to take my friend, Dhanskuhal Patel, to the doctor in Little Rock. Dan has yet to watch the Jesus video I gave to him which is in the Hindi language. Still I am praying for his salvation. Dan is a great guy who is so appreciative of everything we do for him.

Some months back I distributed a prayer card and asked our people to pray for three people who needed Christ as Savior. That week, God placed Dan and his family in my life. He owns the Sheridan Motel and is open to talk about anything. So perhaps he will hear the gospel with a willing heart soon.

We are still processing everything from this past week. It is exciting to think of all God is doing. I still have to tell my mother about it all, which I am putting off. That will be a difficult phone call to say the least. I am just glad my sister is there with her. Denise is doing a wonderful job taking care of mother.

Good friends and good family given by a good God. What more could you ask for?

I MADE IT!

I am finally here on the biggest stage of all - blogging! After many years of saying "no" to blogging, I have given in. What will I say when I post? I do not know. Will others care what I write? Probably not.

After following Ken Coffee's blog for awhile, he has encouraged to step out and do it. I will have big shoes to fill when I make it to Big Spring because he set the standard with his blog on the church's web site. So, I guess I will follow in his footsteps and blog on!

Ken has been a good friend and an excellent pastor to the people at First Baptist Church in Big Spring, Texas. It is phenomenal how through his faithfulness God has begun a new work among the people there. I am constantly amazed at what God can do when we put Him first.

I will share more about our transition in the days ahead, so keep looking in and pray for Sherry and me as we muddle through the next few weeks.
